Mike Turvey.
I’m here today with Mike Turvey, singer and guitarist for the Chase – a great five piece band from the South of England. Their album ‘Slings & Arrows’ is out now for download and they’ve just released a new single called ‘You’ which is available to watch and listen to on YouTube.

Hey Mike, are you ready for my questions?
Hi Sam. Fire away.
Cheers, so let’s start off with a simple one; how are you?
I’m good thanks, just got back from watching Noel Gallagher in Barcelona. He was on top form.
I went to see him Newcastle, had a great time. So your new album ‘Slings & Arrows’ is available for us to buy now, was it fun making the album?
We had a great time making the record. We were recording all through the summer and the songs seemed to go down really easily.
So which musicians influenced you most on the new album?
There are loads of musical references on there. The main ones that seem to come through are the Jam, Stereophonics, Oasis and the Rifles.
Talking about summer, earlier, what do you think is the best summer track?
There are so many. ‘Eddie’s Dreaming’ by the Small Faces. ‘Above The Clouds’ by [Paul] Weller. ‘Millionaire’ by Beady Eye was the one last summer... The list could go on!
Great choice, I like ‘Sunny Afternoon’ by the Kinks. What was the first album you ever bought?
How could I leave that one off?!
The single album version of ‘Familiar to Millions’ by Oasis. Would have been around 2001/02, that was when I really started getting into music.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
Another tough one, there have been so many, Stereophonics at the Roundhouse which was about 4 years ago today. Fans voted for the setlist, great night. Any Weller gig is always a good night as well.
I agree with you on Weller. Where’s your favourite venue to play in?
We’ve always wanted to play the 100 Club in London due to the history and bands that have played there over the years, we’ll be playing there on 27th April so we’re looking forward to that one. The best venue near us is The Wedgewood Rooms, Southsea, where we launched our album in January. Probably one of the best gigs we’ve done.
Do you think you’ll be coming up North anytime soon?
Definitely. We’re sorting out a tour for this summer which will hopefully include some European dates as well.
Sounds great! So, apart from sorting out a tour, what are the band up to?
We’re busy rehearsing and planning really... the plan is to tour in the summer and start on a new record at the end of the year so I’ve started writing for that, really happy with the new stuff so far.
How does the writing process work for you? Is it melody first then lyrics or the other way around? Or maybe even something else...
Generally I’ll start with some chords and a melody. I’ll then work out the rest of the songs and the arrangement before starting the lyrics. The music comes easier to me than the words. I’ll have a few song titles or lines noted down that sometimes just fit with a song.
Right well thanks for the interview Mike! And good luck with the tour and album, take care.
No problem. Thanks Sam. Take it easy.
