I found this image on Tumblr a few months ago, it's probably one of those images that a fourteen year old hipster has made to look like they're hip and cool but I think they've got a point in that statement. Are we what we listen to? I mean, I wouldn't describe myself as surf, classic rock, indie nor mod (ok, maybe a little mod - I do like a good blazer). I know that every time I have gotten into a new musician I obsess over them, to the point where I act like them - seriously, I began saying 'flipping lousy' after picking it up from Pete Townshend.
Saying that, maybe it's not a statement of 'we are what we listen to' but 'we are who we listen to', we all want to be that person who has been spoken about in that song, or even that album in some cases. Every girl has wanted to be a Sally and every boy has wanted to be a Jack, we let ourselves turn into songs that we love because it's all we know, it's all we want because no kid listens to their parents, listens to their teacher or anyone that tries to tell them what to do - they listen to music and they'll follow whatever that song tells them to do. I'm not hopping on the bandwagon of people that tell the us that the reason kids are shooting other kids is because of rap music - that is just stupidity, but I'm saying that songs make us, us. I'm a reserved sort of person, reclusive, simple, calm, sometimes stupid and eccentric and I know that it all comes from the music I've listened to, and because of that I can put a piece of music with each part of my personality.
You are what you listen to.
