Coldplay - Christmas Lights
Coldplay, the marmite of the music world, you either love them or you hate them. I see this song as one of those songs everyone should take to their hearts and admire, it hasn't got Martin's usual high pitched moaning vocals, he uses his best vocal that we catch a glimpse of on the end of 'Fix You' where he utters the famous line 'lights will guide you home...' and so forth, although we do see a hint of it during the chorus but hey, it’s Chris Martin – what did you expect?
The melody is a blighter, a right cheery little number - but it's not obviously cheery, it's not got Shakin' Stevens slapped all over it - it's quite a mellow and a happy piano tune and then the input of drums, guitars and so on just add to the happiness of it all. I love the lyrics, like I do in any Coldplay song. It's different from any other Christmas song where it's usually just a party of semantic fields about Christmas and being jolly - this song is, lyrically, a lot more like 'Fairytale of New York' with the main focus being a depressing one, though 'Fairytale of New York' is more about two people hating each other whereas 'Christmas Lights' appears to be what truly happens at Christmas, falling out with people, getting badly drunk and being alone.
I can guarantee a lot of you won't have heard this song, most of you will be against it because it's Coldplay and won't give it a chance but do, I promise it won’t disappoint and will be played throughout your December.
