Ah yes, the sun is finally shinning down on England and I can wear shorts without having elderly women on the bus judging me for it. This is the first of my ultimate summer songs; The Kinks - Sunny Afternoon.
It's easy to see why this is my favourite song to play whilst the sun is out, the Kinks are such a typically English band, they sing about what it is like on a British summer day - not necessarily the lyrics about a girlfriend taking his car or a taxman taking all his dole but the haunting line 'All I've got's this sunny afternoon' because I know that's all I've go today. Personally I think that only the British can really relate to the meaning. We love our summers, and the Kinks sum it all up brilliantly in 3 minutes and 33 seconds.
It's not just the lyrics either, it's that tune. The opening riff that comes on whilst you sit in your deck chair and begin to relax for the day, it's an easy rhythm to be taken away by. It's not complicated, and it has no need to be - it's very hard to pull off a difficultly played summer song because people want to be able to listen without having to really concentrate. The Kinks have created the perfect summer song here, which is why my summer playlist is called 'Sunny Afternoon' - the title even suggests that this is the ultimate summer song to listen to whilst lazing on a sunny afternoon.
Hope you all enjoy your sunny afternoon!
